Injuries
By Kevin Clark
The nice names you can say about injuries are bloody, blast, dam, the other names F and C, best keep in your brain.
I remember the beginning of my injury 9 weeks ago, I was in Levin running carefree, like a Gazelle at a good pace, when I decided as a experiment to come down from a run to a fast walk, when I did this I felt a slight twinge in the muscle above my left hip, no worries, it was ever so slight, I could just feel it the next day when I decided to go for a much smaller run.
My brain then told me to rest for two days, which I did.
My brain then told me after two days to go out for a slow run, which I did, in fact I felt so good I kept running. After about 10k I felt a slight pain around my left hip area, slight is ok, however after another 1k slight became sore, then sore became one of those nice names, then too painful to run, then too painful to walk. I was out in the country 5k from Levin, no phone, Lois was in Napier, no help, what was I to do? Hitchhike, a builder picked me up in his van. I took his business card, he sounded a good bloke.
The following week I did stretching, stretching and a very light massage. My brain started to tell me to run the injury out. It said I was a weak poof!! I decided to listen to the sensible part of my brain and went back to just walking. The walking still gave me the cardio, not as much as running, but walking required a lot more concentration. I loved the Saturday long walks and particularly enjoyed the company of the ladies. They were a large group and I never got tired of the chatter. The pain slowly dissipated and Lois used her magic massage to finish off the job. I still tell her I require further massage as it is a nice area for a rub. I am now running again, but have decided on Saturday morning to incorporate a walk at the end of my run with the ladies and gentlemen. They are too good a bunch of people not to keep in touch with.
ADVICE:
Listening to your brain is not the best option. Listen to your body.
