April 2010: Committee news

Napier Branch Committee (By Mike Sheely)
Somehow I have ended up the Club Captain of the Napier Hawkes Bay Run Walk.
Thanks for your vote of confidence, the boots left to fill by Robyn are very big.

With a touch of Irish blood in my veins and St Patricks day falling on a Wednesday club night, it seemed appropriate to start the year off with a little bit of hilarity. It was great to see the members wearing the “green” and I’m sure there would have been some double takes as the group walked the streets and Park Island Taradale.
The Pot luck nibbles were superb and with good company a good night was enjoyed, the first of many I hope.

For those who don’t know me, I am not slim, trim or built to run a marathon, but I enjoy a challenge. There are a lot of people out there, like myself, who will never win a race but want a personal challenge, and to feel healthy and have a sense of fitness. Hawkes Bay Run walk has given me the opportunity to test my stamina and improve my general fitness.
I would like to see our members going out in the community and encourage others to join us. Additionally there are keen athletes training by themselves that may not have heard about our club and what we may be able to offer them to help succeed. There is a lot of untapped potential out there and we, our community, would all benefit from more people joining us
I would love to increase the membership and have a greater variance of ages in the club.

To improve our fitness, have more people to run and walk with, spread the work load and have fun doing it is a great objective and goal.

The club has developed some traditions over the years and it is important to keep these and the club “spirit” alive. It’s a “work hard” and “play hard” attitude and I consider the beer (or coffee) tastes sweeter after shedding a bit of sweat.

In my tenure as Club Captain, I will not expect just the committee to undertake the various tasks required to keep the club going but all the members will be expected to contribute towards the well being of OUR club. This may well be for something you think is minor but it may be a major for someone else, as they say “ many hands make light work “.
The coming year will be interesting and I have a lot to learn but I know there are plenty of people around who will help to assist me along the journey.

Hastings Branch Committee (By Doug Craig)
The Club’s focus this year must be to increase membership; we have a small solid base of regularly attendees but we need this to grow for the club to prosper, so this is our challenge and everybody can help. You would think this would be easy as there are plenty of Runners & Walkers in Hastings & Havelock North out on the roads & tracks of Te Mata Peak who are not members of our club, so we need to get their attention but how?

For me, I have been a member less than 2 years and had competed in a few events prior to joining the club. My training was generally taking the dog out for a run but the dog can only go so far, so I did feel a bit under done when competing in the 2008 Rotorua Marathon with my longest training run on the road being 23klms. So after that experience, it pushed me into gear to join the club and it has been a refreshing experience running with like minded people and clocking up the klms together but note I am still working on the goal of finishing an event in comfort!

Everybody’s reasons are different for joining clubs but more and more people are becoming health conscious and running/walking is high up on that list to achieve that, so if we can make it fun by being a very social club and offering plenty of challenges if they want, everybody should be happy.

So for my part I will be sending out an email to members every two to three weeks advising news and events and along with other members organize out of town trips plus social events and we will see if this helps the club grow.

Until next time, keep on moving!!

Club Uniform Issue
The Executive Committee of Run Walk HB has agreed to extend the clothing options available for our club uniform. The new items to be introduced included a tricolour tracksuit which has a green/black/white jacket and black pants and a black polar fleece jacket – both jackets will have our logo screened on the top left corner.
I have samples of some of the sizes which will be available for members to try on prior to ordering over the next few weeks. It is essential members order the correct size as obviously once the items are branded, they can’t be returned.
An order form will be issued detailing the costs, sizes etc together with your membership subscription form for 2010. The order form must be completed and returned to me with payment by 30 April – no payment, no order will be placed.
There will also be the opportunity to order the current club tee shirts, singlets, caps and fluoro jackets for those who don’t already have them or those who wish to order extras.
All these items are being heavily subsidised by the Club – price list to financial members is as follows:-
          Tricolour tracksuit                 $50.00
          Polar fleece jacket                $30.00
          Tee Shirts & Singlets             $30.00  (men’s & ladies style)
          Fluoro Jackets                      $35.00
          Caps                                  $5.00

Tricolour Tracksuit               Tricolour Tracksuit

Doug Clark, club captain for Hastings branch will coordinate receiving member’s orders and the clothing will be available for viewing etc as well.

We look forward to seeing our members proudly wearing these options in due course!
