A Cape Kidnappers Stroll

By Jan Mote

As a change from a Saturday morning walk around the dump circuit, several clinic members joined a group of 120 fellow walkers / strollers on a fund raising walk from Julian Robertson’s fabulous Cape Kidnappers Golf Course and Lodge out to Flat Rock on the Pacific Coast.

Starting at 9.30 am from Wool World, Te Awanga, 2 buses ferried the large group up the stunning road way to the Lodge. After an initial hic-cup which saw our bus take the wrong turn and end up at the Lodge – with no turning bay – the driver had to reverse down the steep winding narrow road (which didn’t impress Pam at all) we alighted and set off over the exclusive Cape Kidnappers Farm to the sea. The 7.5k walk over the shingle road with hills, flats and gullies was challenging with some requiring assistance from the 2 quad bikes (not us ah Pam) to get up the steeper hills.

The ladies on a stroll

When we reached the coast we had a well organised delicious lunch (with our bottle of wine) and a talk from historian Pat Parsons. The weather was fabulous and the views stunning.

Lorraine, Pam, Viv and I decided to give the whaling station walk and talk a miss and head back for coffee at the Golf Club stopping frequently to admire the magnificent views across the sea to Napier and Mahia.

It was a great day, a great experience and an opportunity to enjoy an area which would normally be inaccessible to the public.

Charity involved was Parkinson's HB organised by the Freemasons.
